Codex moved into the ChatGPT desktop app

On July 9, 2026, the standalone Codex app merged into the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS and Windows. Codex keeps a dedicated coding experience inside the app, alongside ChatGPT's Chat and Work modes, and the merged app ships globally on every ChatGPT plan, including Free.

The Codex experience in the merged app includes inline editing in diffs, pull request review in the side panel, faster Computer Use powered by GPT-5.6, and multi-repository projects. Existing Codex app users update as usual. You can make Codex the default view, keep the Codex logo as the app icon, and reach desktop Codex projects from the ChatGPT mobile app.

GPT-5.6: Sol, Terra, Luna

The same announcement pins down the model lineup. The GPT-5.6 family offers three recommended models across Work mode in ChatGPT, the desktop app, Codex CLI, and the Codex IDE extension:

• Sol — the flagship, for complex coding, computer use, research, and security work.
• Terra — balances capability and cost for everyday work.
• Luna — the fastest, lowest-cost option.

The default Power setting uses Sol with medium reasoning.

What this means

For CLI users the app merge changes little day to day — the terminal workflow is untouched — but the model family naming does: Sol, Terra, and Luna are now the vocabulary for picking a Codex model on any surface, including the CLI. See the Codex CLI sheet for the current flag and config surface.
